38th Notes is a local love affair; An Oakland arts and entertainment blog that covers everything from Bay Area music & sports to night life & community issues.
38thNotes exists because the Oakland Bay Area is a rich locale full of underdog grit, spirit and art. We exist because we are beautiful and have so much to offer the world, and yet are serially underestimated, ignored and marginalized. Historically we have been a hub of change, a microcosm of the world to come, and a progressive vanguard. We are leaders and innovators. We made the west coast the left coast. We made activism and power movements cool. And we continue to innovate and cultivate an independent spirit that is often mimicked, but never replicated.
38thNotes is here because the world deserves to know where we’ve been and where we’re heading. We are an outlet for beauty, and thereby a source of it as well.
The nation may ignore us, but we’ve always been independent–in spirit and business structure. 38thNotes in 2010 might as well be Too $hort in 1983. The only difference is that whereas he was slangin custom tapes out of his trunk, we’re pushing dope mp3s from a wordpress. As we build our base, hopefully we will ascend as $hort’s career did. We’ll most likely always be kept at arm’s length, but perhaps that’s the natural place for a region always on the cusp of ingenuity and the brink of the next cool thing.
In any case, we offer up good music, and also articulate the context that the art is emerging from. This is our “what.” We promote the new, and celebrate the old. The Bay Area is too influential and cool to be as marginalized as we are. 38thNotes is the source, the story teller, the curator and the crack dealer. Tune in and enjoy the fruits of our labor and the creative juices that flow and cascade here in the Oakland Bay Area.
