For over a year, we brought you our favorite cuts of every month in the form of The Bay Abridged mixtapes. The tapes got some exposure, but mostly supplied a cult following of fantastic folks who were as excited about the Bay Area’s burgeoning hip-hop scene as we were. It just got to a certain point where we decided to take a break. Thankfully, the quality music did not.
This spring we are relaunching The Bay Abridged mixtape series with local luminaries Oaklandish, with additional support from local apparel brand Cre8tiveClass. Oaklandish, lovers and curators of all things dope and local, was generous enough to award us with an Innovators grant last year to press up these CDs for wider distribution. This is the soft launch of it, but hard copies will be floating around Oaklandish’s store, rig and elsewhere around The Town soon, as we spread the gospel of good local hip-hop far and wide!
The musical content of this tape is pretty diverse and is meant to compliment the New Bay sound that is chronicled on The Thizzler.com and 106 KMEL’s Home Turf show, as well as the Young California movement that DJ Amen is spearheading. The aforementioned platforms have done a tremendous job of putting Bay Area club music on the front burner, and even in creating some collaboration and unity between Bay Area and LA artists. In fact, DC and Amen have put together a Young California mixtape that will be coming out through Conrnerstone and The FADER very soon.
We applaud those efforts, and want to add something else to the pot. The music that you’ll find on the spring edition of The Bay Abridged highlights a few of these “New Bay” emcees, but also sheds light on a lot of other dope artists in the region that aren’t getting as much exposure. The end product is a tape that sums up the eclectic nature of our dynamic hip-hop and R&B scene here in the Bay Area. Listen to the tracks, download the tape, and spread the word!
