No, the first lady of the Jamla army is not from the Bay. And no, Mr. I Got My Rap Name from the Wu-Tang Name Generator is not from our area. But, GQ is an Oakland dude, an Oakland Tech Alum, and one of our favorites. “Beautiful Music,” produced by Ka$h, is from Rapsody’s new album The Idea of Beautiful and is an ode to the art form that raised the three MCs. Rapsody muses about the role of music in her life since conception, while Childish Gambino talks about being a fan of multiple genres and imitating his favorites. GQ closes out the track citing a mix of R&B artists and West Coast hip-hop as influences. He “played Regulate back when Pac played Birdie.”
It’s crazy to really track someone’s growth. We were excited when we first heard that (G)Q was rocking with 9th Wonder. It’s not every day that the dude who was writing raps in the back of science class, whose basket ball games you attended, gets to work with and get a co-sign from a producer of 9th’s caliber. After much time in the studio and a few mixtapes, GQ will release his debut album Death Threats & Love Notes on October 23, 2012. But, first we get to check his rhymes alongside Rapsody and Childish Gambino.
