The Bay and LA have traditionally been thought of as rivals, but in recent years, there has been a lot of cross-pollination between the two. Bay Area artists have long migrated to LA for increased exposure, but there’s also been genuine collaboration between regions lately.
Here, Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs of the Bay’s The Getback trade 16s with D-Smoke and Goldie Slim of Inglewood’s WoodWorks family. The two camps did a mini-tour together last year and recently collaborated on Rafael Casal’s track “I’m Good” as well. It’s great to see their continued growth and fellowship here, in the inaugural webisode of the new Getback Cipher series.
Some of you may remember that the Getback and 38thnotes collaborated a while back to bring you the Get:Live series, featuring live in-studio performances with some of the Bay’s best artists. This is another effort to bring quality emcees together, simultaneously fostering community and sharing verbal prowess. The TeamBackpackCypher has been building quite a movement with their viral series, so we’re excited to see what the GetBack will bring to the table using this medium. With the Young California movement taking over the club scene and efforts like this also afoot, the West is gonna be straight for a while.
