PJ Morton Signs to Young Money, Follows His First Mind and Plays Yoshi’s Oakland

A couple of weeks ago, PJ Morton released Following My First Mind. My first response: Yes! My second response: Wait, he’s with Young Money? I quickly downloaded the EP to see if he was still my PJ. There are a bunch of folks who got put on to PJ once he started touring with Maroon 5. But, I’ve been listening for years. “Mountains and Molehills” is my theme song.  I was sure that the Young Money Cash Money Billionaire hashtag accompanying each download would introduce more people to an artist that I wasn’t quite ready to share. If the whole Adam Levine thing hadn’t changed him, certainly Wayne would. I couldn’t take the idea of exposure (and this new deal) meaning the loss of songs that were actually about love (and didn’t just use the word as a replacement for f*ck) and uplifting tracks I could put on whenever self-doubt kicked in.

Then I hit play and heard “Following My First Mind (Interlude). He’s still my PJ. He’s still about good music, love, following dreams and listening to your heart. I’ve decided to stop being selfish and share PJ with my 38th Notes fam. He has a good amount of free material Following My First Mind and Independently Major, but you should also check Walk Alone.

He will be in town this week at Yoshi’s Oakland. You can purchase tickets to the Wednesday (4/18) 10:30pm show here and if you tweet the name of you favorite PJ Morton song to @38thnotes, you just might win free entry to the show.

Here are two of my faves:

Just left the show and it was amazing. I pray that Oakland brings him back again and again.
