Music Video: Krypto, Los Rakas & The Jacka: “Gyangsta”

Haters are as old as the earth is round. I bet you there were Neanderthals who made cave paintings to clown rival hunters with less prowess. 5 pence says that medieval chamber maids put the kings’ mistresses on blast at the market and that knights caught wind of squires and jesters making light of their latest conquests. The point is that haters aren’t anything new. Director Dahveed of Detail Shoppe drives home this concept with the video for “Gyangstas” starring Krypto, Los Rakas, and Tha Jacka.

Set in Prohibition-era Los Angeles, it’s a chapter in the age-old tale of the common hater. The video stands out because of the meticulous detail of the stylish period costumes, the swank but subterranean speakeasy setting and the brilliantly shadowed lighting.  The song itself is dynamic thanks to it’s brooding Latin/ Bay Area fusion sound, a darker take on the PanaBaynian sound that has become the calling card of Los Rakas. This video goes to show what a good director, solid budget and unique artistic vision gets you. No offense to the 7D and green screen rappers out there, but production value is where the money and staying power is at.

Major props to all the folks affiliated with this video for making a real artistic statement.
